Title: Influence of coagulation behavior and floc properties on membrane fouling:The role of different Al species

Abstract: This study was carried out to investigate that membrane fouling by comparing the coagulation behavior and floc properties of three hydrous Al(III) species (Ala, Alb and

Alc) in Yellow River water treatment. The results indicated that Ala mainly relied on hydrolysis precipitation to remove organic matters, and the main coagulation mechanism of Alb was adsorption bridging and charge neutralization, while Alc purified water by sweeping. Moreover, under the same dosage the aggregates formed by Alb had better removal efficiency for fulvic acid, larger floc size and poor shear resistance that could mitigate membrane fouling. The coagulation mechanism of sweeping was gradually prominent as pH increased, resulting in a strong shear resistance of the flocs at pH 9, which difficult to regenerate. In addition, the membrane fouling was mainly caused by membrane pore blockage in the low dosage of coagulant, and then the membrane fouling mechanism gradually changed to cake layer pollution and concentration polarization with the increase of coagulant dosage. According to the degree of membrane fouling under different pH conditions, the main membrane pollution sources of Ala and Alb/Alc coagulation effluents were cake layer fouling and membrane pore blockage, respectively.
